Team LottoNL-Jumbo failed to join the mix for victory in Belgium’s Gent-Wevelgem today. After a crash involving Tom Leezer and Lars Boom, the peloton split and left the Dutch WorldTour team behind. Leezer ended his day in the hospital. A scan revealed that he fractured his pelvis. He should be sidelined for at least four weeks.
LottoNL-Jumbo’s Steven Kruijswijk and George Bennett ended the Volta a Catalunya in the top 10, seventh and ninth respectively, today in Barcelona.
During the E3 Prijs Harelbeke today in Belgium, Team LottoNL-Jumbo dealt with some bad luck. Leader Lars Boom punctured his tyre just like his team-mate Twan Castelijns. Jos van Emden crashed. At front, though, Belgian Gijs van Hoecke fought in the leading group, which produced winner Greg van Avermaet.
LottoNL-Jumbo’s Steven Kruijswijk sits 10th in classification after placing 10th in the Volta a Catalunya’s stage five today. Team-mate Robert Gesink lit up the early hours, attacking and trying to stay clear of the main guns. They blasted by, led by Alejandro Valverde, who won the stage and took the overall lead.
Team LottoNL-Jumbo’s GC men took advantage of steep terrain in the third stage of the Volta a Catalunya to climb up in the rankings. George Bennett crossed the line in the first group with a team-leading 11th. Steven Kruijswijk and Robert Gesink finished slightly back in 21st and 22nd, respectively. Spain’s Alejandro Valverde won the stage to the ski area at La Molina on the Spanish side of the Pyrenees.
Dylan Groenewegen dashed to fifth in Dwars door Vlaanderen on Wednesday in Waregem. Groenewegen led the chase group across the line behind four leading attackers, with Yves Lampaert taking the victory.
LottoNL-Jumbo placed seventh in the Volta a Catalunya’s team time trial today. Over 41.3 kilometres around the lake of Banyoles, the team clocked 50'43 " -- 1'48’ behind the winning team Movistar.
